Since Windows 10 version 1809, the Remote Server Administration Tools (RSAT) are Features on Demand built into Windows, not a separate download. The ActiveDirectory PowerShell module is part of RSAT: Active Directory Domain Services and Lightweight Directory Services Tools. Install it in an elevated PowerShell:
Get-WindowsCapability -Online -Name 'Rsat.ActiveDirectory*' | Select-Object Name, State
Add-WindowsCapability -Online -Name 'Rsat.ActiveDirectory.DS-LDS.Tools~~~~0.0.1.0'
Import-Module ActiveDirectory
Get-Command -Module ActiveDirectory | Measure-ObjectOr in Settings > System > Optional features > View features, search for "RSAT: Active Directory" and install it. RSAT requires the Pro, Enterprise or Education edition; Windows 11 Home does not offer it.
Other RSAT tools
Get-WindowsCapability -Online -Name 'Rsat*' | Select-Object Name, State | Sort-Object Name| Capability name prefix | Tools |
|---|---|
| Rsat.ActiveDirectory.DS-LDS.Tools | Active Directory Users and Computers, ActiveDirectory module, ADSI Edit |
| Rsat.GroupPolicy.Management.Tools | Group Policy Management console and GroupPolicy module |
| Rsat.Dns.Tools | DNS Manager and DnsServer module |
| Rsat.DHCP.Tools | DHCP console and DhcpServer module |
| Rsat.ServerManager.Tools | Server Manager |
Install all of them at once (slow, several hundred MB):
Get-WindowsCapability -Online -Name 'Rsat*' | Where-Object State -ne 'Installed' | Add-WindowsCapability -OnlineError 0x800f0954 on managed machines
When Windows Update is managed by WSUS or Configuration Manager, the feature files may not be available from the configured update server and the installation fails (often with 0x800f0954). Options:
- In Group Policy, enable Computer Configuration > Administrative Templates > System > Specify settings for optional component installation and component repair and allow downloading repair content directly from Windows Update, then run
gpupdate /forceand retry. - Install from the Features on Demand media that matches the Windows build, with
Add-WindowsCapability -Online -Name ... -Source D:\ -LimitAccess.
Windows Server
On Windows Server the module is a server feature:
